FireWire imaging gets a coaxial boost

OCTOBER 21, 2008--Coax cabling offers the greatest potential bandwidth of various "no-new-wire" options for systems developers. That fact led the 1394 Trade Association to investigate the possibilities of using that same coax cable and the association has completed a standard, "Networking IEEE 1394 Clusters via UWB over Coaxial Cable," that defines a bridge from FireWire (IEEE 1394) to the coax cable. FireWire has long been recognized as the best network for entertainment and in particular video entertainment. It was designed from the beginning to stream video with guaranteed QoS. FireWire is fast enough for the task and includes a security layer. The new standard is divided into four parts a no-new-wires PHY and suitable MAC layer, a way to integrate multimedia and legacy IP-centric traffic, a way to handle device commands and stream management and a way to handle non-IP devices over the IP layer.
