On June 30 and July 1, 2011, the first combined meeting of the GenICam and CoaXPress working groups took place in Munich, Germany. The working groups' objective was to increase integration of the CoaXPress and GenICam standards in order to ensure easy application of the standards by the user.

The CoaXPress Standard, which is hosted by the Japan Industrial Imaging Association (JIIA), is a high-speed point-to-point serial communication standard for the transmission of video and still images using cameras and frame grabbers, scalable over single or multiple coaxial cables. The GenICam Standard, hosted by the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA), is a generic programming interface for cameras to decouple interface technology from application programming interfaces.

CoaXPress already mandates the use of GenTL, the transport layer interface of GenICam, grabbing images from the camera and moving them to the user’s application. However, details for the integration of the GenICam standard into CoaXPress needed to be discussed in a face-to-face meeting with greater detail. Moreover, potential changes were argued that are necessary for a further integration of GenICam and CoaXPress. One important outcome of the meeting was the use of the GenICam SNFC (Standard Naming Feature Convention) by CoaXPress, which will lead to further standardization and simplification.

The next GenICam working group meeting will be held in Fall 2011 in Austin, Texas.
