Engineers at PV Labs -- a company based at McMaster University Innovation Park in Hamilton, Ontario in Canada -- are working work with counterparts at MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (Richmond, BC, Canada ) to commercialize a camera for detecting ice.
The camera will use the principal of spectral reflectivity to detect the unique spectral signature of ice, and will be able to identify ice on all surfaces including roads, runways, and aircraft.
The team of engineers at MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates and PV Labs aim to have a prototype of the ice camera available for demonstration by the end of this year and to have a product available by winter 2012.
Specific demand for the product has been expressed by those in the aviation industry where the detection of ice on aircraft is of paramount importance.
