Microsoft researcher presents 3-D Kinect developments

At next week's Solidworks World 2012, Microsoft software developer Dr. David Molyneaux will present an overview of the recent advances that have been made in the company’s research labs to enable objects captured by the Kinect camera to be reconstructed in 3-D.

At next week's SolidWorks World 2012, Microsoft software developer Dr. David Molyneaux will present an overview of the recent advances that have been made in the company’s research labs to enable objects captured by the Kinect camera to be reconstructed in 3-D.

His talk will be held between 10:30am-12:00pm on Monday 13 at the SolidWorks 2012 event at the San Diego Convention Center (San Diego, CA, USA).

Dr. Molyneaux himself is a Senior Research Associate in the Embedded Interactive Systems (EIS) group at Lancaster University, but based full-time in Microsoft Research (Cambridge, UK) where he is also a research consultant.

His work has involved developing KinectFusion, a real-time 3-D reconstruction and interaction system using an off-the-shelf moving Kinect.

The system allows a user to pick up a standard Kinect camera and move rapidly within a room to reconstruct a high-quality, geometrically precise 3-D model of the scene. To achieve this, the system continually tracks the 6DOF pose of the camera and fuses live depth data from the camera into a single global 3-D model in real time.

During the talk, there will be a live demo using the prototype software.
