Rethink Robotics launches software update for Baxter robot
Baxter robots are two-armed vision-enabled industrial robots which can be configured to assist in manufacturing or research environments. Rethink Robotics, the developer of the robot, designed Baxter to be more human-like and optimized it to work alongside people on the factory floor.
With the latest release of its accompanying software, Baxter will be able to perform a new set of applications, including the ability to pick up and place parts at any axis, allowing the robot to perform a broad array of new tasks. These include picking up objects off a shelf or loading machines in a horizontal motion, according to the Rethink Robotics press release.
With the 2.0 software, users will also be able to define the exact trajectory that they want Baxter’s arms to follow simply by moving them. For example, Baxter can be taught where to move hold its arms in space for a predetermined amount of time, or until a signal indicates that they can begin moving again. It also enables the robot to hold parts in front of scanners, inspection cameras, or painting stations in industrial automation environments.
In addition, the 2.0 software features a number of overall performance improvements, which include:
- Faster operating pace
- Increased consistency in the picking/placement of objects
- More fluid movements between points
- Integrated vision improvements, which enables Baxter to detect and distinguish a broader range of part geometries
The improvements offered with the 2.0 software represents the next step in the evolution of the Baxter robot, suggests Scott Eckert, president and CEO of Rethink Robotics.
“While Baxter’s 2.0 software will greatly expand the possibilities for both new and existing customers, this release is just the beginning. Baxter is a unique, upgradable software platform, and the robot’s capabilities will continue to evolve to help manufacturers increase their overall efficiency, and help them realize an even greater return on their investment over time.”
Existing customers will be able to download the new software and upgrade their Baxter robot.
