Total machine vision sales in North America saw a 23% year-over-year jump, according to new statistics from the Automated Imaging Association (AIA.)

Included in these statistics are sales of machine vision systems and components. The machine vision systems category, which includes application-specific machine vision and smart cameras, was the main driver of growth in Q3, with a 25% increase from Q3 2012.

Machine vision components, including cameras, imaging boards, and lighting, also saw increases in the third quarter, growing 10% year-over-year. Sales for optics and software, meanwhile, saw a slight decrease in sales.

The Q3 growth represents the third consecutive quarter of growth, and with manufacturing indicators remaining strong into Q4, the AIA is optimistic about year-end results, according to AIA President Jeff Burnstein.

Sentiment from industry experts is mixed regarding machine vision sales heading into next year," said Alex Shikany, AIA’s Director of Market Analysis, in the AIA press release. "For machine vision components, 71% of industry experts believe we will see an increase in sales over the next six months. However, nearly three quarters of the experts expect total system sales to be flat."

The AIA also noted that all AIA members participating in the AIA sales data program will receive free copies of the Quarterly Machine Vision Sales Tracking Reports from both the AIA and the EMVA, as a result of the agreement to release correlating statistics. The exact rollout date for these dual efforts will be announced soon, according to the AIA.
