Datalogic partners with digital watermarking provider to improve checkout scanning speed

Datalogic has announced a collaboration with digital watermarking and identification company Digimarc Corporation which aims to significantly reduce checkout times for retailers and boost the average number of items scanned per minute.

Datalogic has announced a collaboration with digital watermarking and identification company Digimarc Corporation which aims to significantly reduce checkout times for retailers and boost the average number of items scanned per minute.

In the collaboration, Datalogic’s Magellan 9800i multi-plane imaging scanner is now enabled to detect and process Digimarc barcodes, which contain the same global trade item number carried in a product’s UPC code. Digimarc barcodes, however, are invisibly repeated multiple times over an entire package, eliminating the need to locate the barcode and position it toward the scanner. Magellan 9800i barcode scanners offer digital imaging of 1D and 2D codes in all reading planes and an optional top down reader adds a large topside field-of-view, as well as a customer-facing mobile device reader.

The digital watermarking barcodes enables users to embed digital information into audio, images, video, and printed materials in a way that is imperceptible and easily detected by digital devices, such as the Magellan 9800i barcode scanner.

With the combined Datalogic and Digimarc barcode technology, checkout clerks, as well as self-paying customers, can quickly scan items and improve checkout times by as much as 50%, according to a press release on the collaboration.

"Just as the UPC changed the face of retail when it was introduced almost 50 years ago, Digimarc Barcodes will have a similar impact," said Matt Schler, General Manager of Fixed Retail Scanning, Datalogic in the press release. "We’re thrilled to be partnering with Digimarc to introduce this new, innovative technology to retailers."
