3D measurement system sets optimal seat location for crash dummy
When a crash dummy is placed into a vehicle for testing, different points and angles have to be determined to ensure that the dummy is positioned in the proper location. One way to obtain such data is with the use of a 3D optical measurement system.
One particular point of interest on a crash dummy is called the H-Point (hip point), which is the pivot between the torso and upper legs that defines the theoretical position of a passenger’s hip. In order to meet international regulations, a dummy is placed onto the seat according to the defined procedure, and back angle, seat height, and longitudinal adjustments are fixed. From there, an AICON MoveInspect DPS 3D system is used to determine the relevant angles and positions.
The MoveInspect DPS, which is primarily used for online dummy positioning in vehicle testing, is on a rolling tripod and is powered with a notebook running Windows 7. The system features a rotating camera bar with three 5 MPixel cameras. The lenses used on each of the cameras is are 8mm lenses and the lighting used is an infrared LED ring light. With all points on the dummy measured and displayed, the operator is able to put the dummy into its target position by using the DPS software module, which generates templates for measuring plans and features automatic referencing and deformation analysis.
