Edmund Optics has announced the 45 finalists for its 2014 Educational Award, which acknowledges novel projects involving optics that will have an impact on future application, and is given annually to undergraduate and graduate programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics at non-profit colleges and universities working on projects involving optics.

Fifteen finalists were selected from the Americas, Asia, and Europe, for a total of 45 finalists from 21 countries. Edmund Optics recently expanded the scope of its award program, announcing that it will now also consider all 45 finalists for the Normal Edmund Inspiration Award. This award is given to the optics program that best embodies the legacy of Norman Edmund. It consists of $5,000 in product donations.

Educational Award recipients from each region will be announced on October 15, 2014. Each region will award a Gold ($10,000 in products); a Silver ($7,500 in products); and a Bronze ($5,000 in products). All remaining global finalists will be given a $500 Product Matching Award.

The award, in its fifth year, showcases the creativity and innovation of the applicants, which continues to impress Edmund Optics’ award team, according to Kirsten Bjork-Jones, Director of Global Marketing Communications.

"The technical expertise and inventive use of optical components to create solutions that help make this world a better place is what this Educational Award program is all about. And inspiring optical innovation is key to what Edmund Optics is all about."

More than 880 applications were received from all over the world, and this year, Edmund Optics will award more than $85,000 USD in products to the winners.

Three award recipients will be selected from each region, with one applicant receiving the Norman Edmund Inspiration Award.
