VISION 2014 spotlight: Machine vision in intelligent traffic systems

Among the other "firsts" that will be featured at VISION 2014 in Stuttgart is an exhibition on the benefits of using machine vision in non-industrial traffic-related applications called "Traffic VISION."

Machine vision continues to be utilized more in applications such as traffic management, traffic monitoring, traffic safety, and transport, according to the Messe Stuttgart press release, and because of this, the Traffic VISION will offer a number of events directly aimed at visitors targeting the traffic sector. This includes a special topic block on “Machine vision for the traffic industry,” and a podium discussion on the same topic, as well as application-based talks on the market.

Special logos will be given to the companies who have been identified as having expertise, products, or solutions in the area of machine vision for traffic. As of now, approximately 20 exhibitors have been registered for the tour. Among these exhibitors is The Austrian Institute of Technology, which has developed special algorithms for its 3D stereo vision application, which will be showcased at the exhibition. The system—which was developed in collaboration with the Vienna-based Bombardier Competence Centre for Light Rail Vehicles—allows for the monitoring of vehicle surroundings and will automatically "learn" how to assess potential dangers and react accordingly.

At the first ever Inspect Application Forum, a special presentation entitled, "Optical test methods for high-resolution camera modules in driver assistance systems," will be given by Daniel Winters, R&D Manager at Trioptics. In addition, Jorgen Pederson, Business Development Manager (ITS) at Allied Vision Technologies, will provide information on how machine vision technology can revolutionize data collection, distribution, and use within intelligent traffic management systems.

Lastly, a series of talks within the VDMA-sponsored Industrial VISION Days forum will be focused on the topic of machine vision for the traffic industry. A podium discussion featuring a number of traffic industry experts will also be devoted to the topic of traffic and transport. This discussion is being organized by media partner ITS International, with Colin Sowman, Editor of ITS International, as the chairman. Participants in the discussion will touch on how machine vision systems are currently being integrated in the traffic sector, and how they will be used in the future. They will also look at other machine vision solutions in other application areas to see if they could be used in intelligent traffic systems.

VISION 2014, which already has nearly 500 exhibitors from all over the world signed up and ready to showcase their latest products and technologies, provides a global platform for suppliers, integrators, engineers, OEMs, and more to meet and discuss the latest in the world of machine vision.
