[Page 2] Q&A: A push toward 10GigE and the benefits the high-speed interface offers
The following is a discussion continued from page one with John Ilett, President of Emergent Vision Technologies, Inc.
Are market changes affecting your product development, and if so, how?
Yes, we are always listening to customers. Cost is always a factor and we are always working to create products that address the customer needs while keeping costs highly competitive. New features are always being introduced and are easy for the customer to access through our remote firmware upgrade capabilities. The HS-20000, for example, was specifically designed to cater to customer needs in high-volume applications in sports entertainment.
In which areas or applications do you see the most growth?
We are currently in a variety of applications. However, we see substantial growth in areas such as entertainment, sports analysis, intelligent traffic systems, and railway inspection, where the fiber options can really be attractive for some implementations.
Is there a particular trend or product that you see as “the next big thing?”
I will let our customers do the talking for us. Once informed, many become very excited about the 10GigE option. Complements to our 10GigE product line will further excite and will reinforce 10GigE as the top interface for ultra-high speed applications.
How will imaging systems have to change to meet emerging applications?
As with other higher speed interfaces, the transition would require a different grabber card (a 10GigE NIC) and different data transmission cabling. However, since 10GigE is a long time established standard serving multiple industries, the cost of such components is a fraction of other machine vision specific components such as CoaXPress and CameraLink. Our eSDK and eCapture Viewer software is available for application development and is common across all our products and is very easy to use.
Do you have any new exciting products or developments on the horizon?
To complement our popular HS camera line supporting SFP+ 10GigE interface, the
10GBase-T/RJ45 10GigE interface will be supported allowing Cat6, Cat6a, and Cat7 cabling for lengths up to 100m. This will result in Emergent cameras at an even lower cost and smaller form factor. Aside from that, the cameras will operate in the same way as our current SFP+ 10GigE models, and will be supported in our current software.
Is there anything vision-related that you’ve seen recently, in any particular market, that you thought was particularly cool or interesting?
I liked seeing our Emergent Vision HS-2000 working reliably in a customer system which rotates the camera at 1000 rpm for taking live full 360° panoramas. It was installed in order to replace another five-imager camera system that was designed to perform the same task. We choose our suppliers very carefully and pay great attention to all details of reliable camera manufacturers to produce a high quality and rugged product.
