Delphi self-driving car begins coast-to-coast journey

On March 22, Delphi Automotive PLC deployed itsself-driving car from near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, where traveled all the way to New York in a 3,500-mile journey.

Theautonomous vehicle is an Audi SQ5 that is equipped with Delphi’s self-driving car technology. Delphi’s car had recent success in testing in California and on the streets of Las Vegas, so the next logical step was to test the vehicle by broadening the range of driving conditions, according to Jeff Owens, Delphi’s chief technology officer. With the cross-country test, the team was able to collect invaluable data to further advance the company’s active safety technology development.

The car’svision system is comprised of four short-range radars and six LIDAR sensors. Delphi electronically-scanning radars (ESR) can scan 650 feet ahead of a moving vehicle and up to 442 million objects a day. In addition, the car has one advanced driver assistance systems camera from MobilEye, one high-resolution color camera, and one infrared camera (brand or model types are undisclosed.) In addition, the car utilizes a multi-domain controller, localization system, V2V/V2X DSRC wireless communication technology, and intelligent software algorithms that enable the vehicle to make complex, human-like decisions for real-world automated driving. This includes such functions as traffic jam assist, automated highway pilot with lane change, automated urban pilot, and automated parking and valet.

Delphi’s active safety technologies reportedly enable the vehicle to instantaneously make complex decisions, like stopping and then proceeding at a four-way stop, timing a highway merge, or calculating the safest maneuver around a bicyclist on a city street. Situations such as these are limitation for much of the current technology on the market, according to Owens.

“Our comprehensive product portfolio and vehicle integration expertise uniquely positions Delphi as one of only a handful of companies with the ability to provide automakers complete automated driving solutions,” he said.
