Visionary.ai, a developer of software-based image-signal processor (ISP) technology, and Innoviz, a provider of light detection and ranging (lidar) sensors and perception software, have announced a partnership to improve 3D machine vision performance for a range of applications involving robotics, smart cities, and drones.

Our featured application story covers an autonomously driving robotic system that includes a vehicle, robotic arm, 3D stereo camera system, PLC, and software. A textile manufacturer has developed a solution where a robot drives to a storage area, picks up a pallet of bobbins, and drives the pallet to the creel area. Once there, a gripper on a robotic arm is positioned vertically above the pallet, so it can pick up a bobbin on the pallet and load it on a mandrel of a creel. Immervision, a developer of advanced vision systems combining optics, image processing, and sensor fusion technology, announced it was chosen by Halodi Robotics to provide its next generation vision system for its humanoid service robot platform, capable of handling both human and computer vision.

What if the future end user vision system was just a camera and 5G transmitter and small amorphous solar cell built into the device—not a bulky separate panel. In our most recent "On Vision" column, Tom Brennan asserts that to take a picture, process it, and return a result—the core functions of a vision system—no cord is necessary and that free from cables, vision may break into all kinds of new applications.
