A leading biometrics-based live-scan identification and verification system supplier, Identix Inc. (Sunnyvale, CA) has delivered its TouchSafe II optical-scanning, image-processing, and LAN III software technologies to Siemens AG (Vienna, Austria) as part of an integrated conferencing and voting system that is now operational at the Turkish Parliament in Ankara. The scanner and image-processing assemblies, which are built into the desks of the 568 parliament deputies along with video touchscreens, optically read and instantly verify each deputy`s forefingerprint for attendance, voting, and speaking acknowledgments. . . . Comerica Inc. (Detroit, MI), a regional bank-holding company, has implemented the RedWood SD-3 helical-cartridge tape subsystem and the Powder Horn 9310 robotic library subsystem, both from Storage Technology Corp. (STC; Louisville, CO), to electronically store more than 6 billion check images. Integrated and managed by software, this STC archive storage system can retrieve a check image in 1 to 1.5 minutes at an average cost of $0.20/1000 checks, compared to three to four minutes at $0.32/1000 images for microfilm. . . . The BodySearch x-ray imaging system, which can detect both metallic and organic materials such as drugs, weapons, and contraband, has been installed in Deer Lodge State Prison, MT, by American Science & Engineering Inc. (Billerica, MA). This imaging system uses patented Z-Backscatter technology and requires no physical contact to scan inmates for illegal articles.
