System's accelerator processes 90 Gflops/s
JULY 21, 2009--The standalone image-processing system mvXCellBox is based on the PowerXCell processor. The heart of the system consists of an mvXCell-8i accelerator board with nine cores at 2.8 GHz, 4 Gbytes of RAM and two external Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. The accelerator board processes 90 Gflops/s (double precision) with energy efficiency of 0.78 Gflops/s per watt. The system offers one PCI Express x16, which can be used as a frame grabber or another interface board. Gigabit Ethernet interfaces can be used to connect GigE cameras such as the mvBlueCOUGAR series.

mvXCellBox - Stand-alone image processing device with PowerXCell multi-core processor
It provides impressive graphics in the PlayStation 3, while in Los Alamos it helps the "Roadrunner" to be on a top position on the ranking of worldwide fastest and at the same time eco-friendliest supercomputers: IBM's 8i multi-core processor.
MATRIX VISION offers a stand-alone image processing system named mvXCellBox, which is based on the PowerXCell processor. The heart of the system consists of a mvXCell-8i accelerator board with nine cores at 2.8 GHz, four GB RAM and two external Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. The accelerator board stands out with excellent 90 GFlops/s processing power (Double Precision) with a low cost of 43 US Dollar per GFlop/s as well as excellent energy efficiency of 0.78 GFlops/s per Watt. These are much better values compared to x86 systems. For the image processing part, the mvXCellBox offers one PCI Express x16, which can be used for a frame grabber or another interface board. Furthermore, the Gigabit Ethernet interfaces can be used to connect GigE cameras like the mvBlueCOUGAR series.
Beside the image processing, the power of the multi-core processor can also be used to accelerate applications, which have to process a huge amount of float, integer and pixel data. The processing runs significantly faster compared to a standard PC. For this reason, the mvXCellBox is not only attractive for industrial customers from the areas image processing, medicine technology and video technology, but also for interested parties from the technical-scientifical environment.
