Polarized Cameras for Inspection

With polarization measurement, manufacturers can inspect non-metallic transparent or reflective materials such as water, plastic, or glass; black lettering on a black background, such as appears on tires; or blister packaging for pharmaceutical products.

SVS-Vistek offers six polarized camera models within the EXO series with 5- or 12-MPixel resolution and 10- to 75-fps frame rates. The cameras use polarized sensors IMX264MZR, IMX250MZR, and IMX253MZR from Sony, which work with a matrix of polarizing filters of different orientation (0°, 90°, 45° and 135°). The filter is applied directly on the sensor in each 2 x 2 pixel array. With a single acquisition—without changing the illumination setup—the degree of polarization of the light, its polarization direction, and the intensity of the polarized light can be measured and evaluated simultaneously. Changes to the mechanical or optical settings on the lens or the illumination setup are not necessary, which simplifies many tasks in image processing, the company says. With polarization measurement, manufacturers can inspect non-metallic transparent or reflective materials such as water, plastic, or glass; black lettering on a black background, such as appears on tires; or blister packaging for pharmaceutical products.
