Prophesee Closes €50M C Series Round with New Investment from Prosperity7
PARIS—Prophesee has announced the completion of its Series C round of funding with the addition of a new investment from Prosperity7 ventures. The round now totals €50m, including backing from initial Series C investors Sinovation Ventures and Xiaomi. They join an already strong group of international investors from North America, Europe and Japan that includes Intel Capital, Robert Bosch Venture Capital, 360 Capital, iBionext, and the European Investment Bank. The company intends to use the Series C round to further invest in product development/engineering as well as global commercialization resources to ensure customer success
With the investment round, Prophesee becomes EU’s most well-funded fabless semiconductor startup, having raised a total of $127M since its founding in 2014.

Prophesee’s approach to enabling machines to see is a fundamental shift from traditional camera methods and aligns directly with the increasing need for more efficient ways to capture and process the dramatic increase in the volume of video input. Event-based vision is a paradigm-shifting advancement that uses AI-enabled neuromorphic techniques based on how the human eye records and interprets visual inputs. Among its benefits for developers of advanced machine vision systems are energy efficiency, low latency, adaptive processing and rapid learning. Event-based vision is ideally suited to machine vision applications for industrial automation, IoT, automotive, and mobile cases that require extremely high performance, low power operation and/or operation in challenging lighting conditions.
Traditional machine vison systems have relied on frame-based methods which represent motion by capturing a number of still frames each second. For modern computer-enabled vision in industrial machines, this representation of motion is of little use. The camera is “blind” between each frame, losing information on moving objects. And, each image containing the same irrelevant background objects is repeatedly recorded, generating excessive unhelpful data. To understand the advantages of event-based vision, consider that in a conventional video an entire image (i.e., the light intensity at each pixel) is recorded at a pre-assigned interval, known as the frame rate. A standard movie has a frame rate of 24 frames per second (fps), but some video is recorded at a higher frame rate of 60 fps (16.7 ms intervals). While this works well in representing the ‘real world’ when displayed on a screen, recording the entire image every time increment oversamples all the parts of the image that have not changed.
For machine vision applications, this means that lots of unnecessary data is acquired, especially at high frame rates, whereas the most dynamic part of the image is under-sampled. In contrast, the human eye (on which Prophesee’s technology is based) samples changes at up to 1000 times per second but does not record the primarily static background at such high frequencies.Event-based sensing is a biologically inspired solution to this under- and over-sampling. Rather than integrating the number of photo-generated charges at every pixel after a pre-defined interval (i.e., synchronously), each pixel instead works independently (i.e., asynchronously). Each pixel reports when it detects a change in the illumination intensity that is above or below a defined percentage of the previous intensity. An added benefit of this asynchronous approach is a much-enhanced dynamic range, since the pixel sensitivity does not have to be set globally.
