Our take:
Developed byCypress Semiconductor Corp. and THine Electronics, Inc., the Ascella USB 3.0 reference design kit is designed to accelerate customers’ time-to-market without expensive initial costs for developing camera firmware. It addresses a variety of camera applications in in consumer electronics, notebook/tablet PCs, as well as industrial, medical, machine vision, and educational usages.
The design kit is based on Cypress’s EZ-USB CX3 USB 3.0 camera controller and Thine’s THP7312 image signal processor. The EZ-USB CX3 USB 3.0 programmable camera controller enables developers to add USB 3.0 connectivity to any image sensors supporting the Mobile Industry Processor Interface (MIPI) Camera Serial Interface Type 2 (CSI-2) standard. The THP7312 is an image processing engine for a digital camera.
The kit, which is available through e-con Systems, is equipped with an OmniVision OV13850CMOS image sensor and features such functions as auto-focus and live video streaming for a range of applications. Developers can use the kit as a production-ready final product and can also utilize it as a development tool for high-resolution camera systems.
"The Ascella reference design kit leverages Cypress's programmable USB 3.0 controller, our expertise in USB system designs and THine's advanced image signal processing technology," said Mark Fu, Senior Marketing Director of the USB 3.0 product line at Cypress. "It provides a compelling demonstration of using 5-Gbps SuperSpeed USB technology in camera and imaging applications."
Ascella supports the streaming of full resolution at 21 fps, live video at 4K at 30 fps, and 1080p at 60 fps.
