With the NFL season right around the corner, here is a brief bit of news that ties imaging and America’s favorite sport together.
In an effort to provide a better look at close plays, CBS Sports is using "Pylon Cam" cameras which will be used during select broadcasts of Thursday Night Football and NFL on CBS, and possibly even for Super Bowl 50.
Despite how experienced and skilled the referees may be, these high resolution cameras will provide an additional look at close plays on the sideline, goal line, and in the corner of the end zone. CBS will use four custom-molded pylons with multiple cameras to film the goal lines and sidelines on each side of the field.
Earlier in the year, ESPN tested out Pylon Cams at the FCS Championship came, and noted that they came in handy on a number of plays. ESPN senior coordinating producer Ed Placey noted, however, that more work would need to go into it.
"But we don’t have enough control of when the signals are clear at this point to guarantee that every time something happens around the pylon we will have a clear shot," Placey said. "But we are learning enough about it in each situation we go into that we dial some new things differently and hopefully we’ll have some success tonight. Not only do we need the signal to be just right, but you need the play to happen around it."
