SOPHIA cameras from Princeton Instruments are ultra-low-noise cameras designed for low-light scientific imaging applications such as astronomy, in vivo small-animal imaging, chemi-luminescence, soft x-ray imaging, and spectroscopy. The camera features a 2048 x 2048 back-illuminated CCD image sensor with a 15 µm pixel size that can achieve a readout rate of 16 MHz. The SOPHIA 2048BX (also available in the SOPHIA 2048B model), features Princeton Instruments’ eXcelon back-thinned sensor technology, which reduces etaloning - a phenomenon that is caused by light passing through the CCD, being reflected at the rear surface and producing interference fringes when reflected light interacts with incoming waves. Additionally, the scientific imaging CCD cameras feature a USB 3.0 interface and ArcTec cooling technology to minimize dark noise by cooling the CCD to less than -130°F using only air assist.
