JULY 19--Sony Electronics (Park Ridge, NJ; www.sony.com) has introduced the DXC-190, a one-CCD color video camera for the medical microscopy industry that offers especially sharp, high picture quality and accuracy, even for shooting complex biological structures that are mere nanometers in size. "Sony has used its expertise in broadcast and consumer imaging to bring the medical community a compact camera that produces reliable color images with a high signal-to-noise ratio, at a price that is reasonable to almost any research laboratory," said Steven Blum, vice president of medical systems for Sony Electronics Broadcast and Professional Company. "The DXC-190 model addresses the microscopy industry's need for a product that delivers the high color quality and accurate color reproduction necessary to elucidate key microscopic details, ensuring careful analysis."

A 10-bit digital-signal processor within the DXC-190 allows it to perform a variety of advanced functions. Backlight compensation and automatic white balancing permit users to capture clear, high-quality images even when the visual field and lighting conditions vary. The external synchronization function permits manipulations such as video switching to be accomplished without causing picture distortion when multiple cameras are connected to a supervisory system.

The DXC-190--2-5/8 x 2-1/4 x 5-1/2 in. and just 600 gis easy to install, even in hospital settings, where space is at a premium. The camera uses a triple multiplexing method to simultaneously deliver power to the camera, video signal, and sync signal. An adapter also can be connected to the camera via a single coaxial cable.
