Space Vision’s portable Cartesia 3D body scanner is a multi-camera vision system that creates a 3D image of a subject within seconds in order to provide accurate measurements for tailored clothing.

The new 3D vision system was developed with an emphasis on portability.

"Previously, our 3D scanner was very hard to transport from one place to another," said Yuji Nishio, Leader of Technical Design Development at Space Vision," so we have always had disadvantages compared to portable systems and could not help all the people who wanted to know their exact body measurements."

As a result, Space Vision decided to develop a compact and lightweight system for measuring bodies, which, according to the company, can be set up by one person in minutes and is the lightest 3D body measurement system available.

Three board-level UI-1221LE USB 2.0 cameras from IDS Imaging Development Systems are mounted on each of the three separate towers of the scanning system, which produces an accurate digital reconstruction of the person’s body within 2 seconds. UI-1221LE cameras feature a 1/3” 0.36 MPixel global shutter CMOS image sensor from Aptina that can achieve a frame rate of 87.2 fps at full resolution.

The Cartesia system projects a laser pattern onto the person being measured, and the reflected light is captured by the camera system. The captured images are then used to create the 3D image of the person within the system.

"The cameras are very suitable for our application," said Nishio, "and we appreciate the flexibility of the IDS support. We needed slight modifications to the connector, which have been implemented by IDS without any problems. Especially for us, IDS provided additional features in the uEye API."

In addition, Space Vision utilized the IDS Cockpit to adjust individual camera parameters and to check images right after that set-up.
