We're up to the challenge!
We would like to challenge the claim put forth in the recent article "Infrared lights spot glass-bottle flaws" (Vision Systems Design, April 2003, p. 29). The software developer, whose inspection must be performed in less than 20 ms, chose to create his own algorithms because he believed that "off-the-shelf software from companies such as Matrox Imaging" were not fast enough.
The Matrox Imaging Library (MIL), including the Geometric Model Finder, has been used successfully in many circle-location applications that require real-time performance. Our algorithms are optimized with Intel MMX, as well as SSE and SSE2. Benchmarks for MIL 7.5 are available on our Web site: www.matrox.com/imaging/products/mil/home.cfm.
Moreover, the MIL is also carefully optimized for our Odyssey vision processors and Helios frame grabbers. These imaging boards are equipped with the custom Oasis ASIC, whose Pixel Accelerator greatly accelerates the building-block operators such as spatial filters, morphology, arithmetic, and logic.
By choosing an off-the-shelf software package from an established company such as Matrox Imaging, systems integrators and OEMs have the benefit of a faster time to market, lower R&D costs, flexibility for upgrading the system in the future, and solid support services.
