Hardware platform compresses images
JPEG2000 hardware compression platform, powered by Xilinx FPGA accelerators, uses a wavelet-based digital imaging compression standard superseding the original discrete-cosine-transform-based JPEG compression method. The JPEG2000 PMC daughter card is based on two ADV212 devices and a SPARTAN- 3AN FPGA. It can grab and compress up to 140 Mpixels/s from two independent cameras and can either encode the video frames prior to or after applying an advanced video/imaging algorithm.

Optical system measures moving objects
SPARC (surface pattern analyzer and roughness calculator) optical measuring system can capture three-dimensional images of moving objects. Using three synchronized cameras and special lamps in combination with partially transparent dielectric mirrors, only one single camera shot with approximately 100-µs exposure time is necessary. Typical applications are inspection of embossed structures, braille dots, and surface profiles.

Cameras have added features
Several new features have been added to the company’s scout and pilot cameras. Gamma correction modifies the brightness of images by calculating a correction value for each pixel in an image. By activating and adjusting the Gamma feature, a user can make the image appear brighter or darker. Binning increases the camera’s response to light by summing the charges from adjacent pixels. And a debouncer feature discriminates between a valid and an invalid signal on the camera’s digital inputs. The debouncer feature specifies a minimum time that an input signal must remain high or low to be sensed by the camera as valid.
