Vision Systems Design's take:
Chinese drone manufacturer DJI has announced the launch of two interchangeable-lens cameras designed for the company’s Inspire 1 professional model drone.
The cameras, the X5 and X5R, will make the DJI Inspire 1 the first commercially-available drone feature a micro four thirds image sensor, which will allow photographers the ability to capture up to 13 stops, making 4K video in low-light environments possible.
DJI’s new cameras feature 16 MPixel 4/3” CMOS image sensors that can capture images at up to 30 fps. With an M43 mount-supporting auto-focus lens mount, DJI MFT 15mm f/1.7 ASPH, Panasonic Lumix 15mm f/1.7, and Olympus M. ED 12mm f/2.0 lenses are supported.
The more advanced X5R model will record video to both a microSD card and a solid-state disk to record CinemaDNG (RAW) video.
"The professional applications of the Zenmuse X5 are almost endless," said Eric Cheng, DJI’s director of aerial imaging. "In addition to shooting professional-quality photos and 4K video, the new camera can be used to create high-quality aerial maps and 3D models and can also help industrial teams get even more detail from their aerial imaging pursuits — for example, in utility inspection — using a drone."
