Nikon announced that it will release a vision system for industrial robots in the fall of 2024. The company plans unveil a demonstration version of the product at the Robot Technology Japan exposition, which is scheduled to occur July 4-6.

It is designed for such applications as bin picking or assembly work on moving workpieces. Nikon says its vision system can recognize small, black, or glossy workpieces.

The system is equipped with 2D and 3D cameras, vision controller, and image-processing algorithms. The company says the vision system can recognize and respond to sudden changes in the position or orientation of a workpiece.

It can achieve a speed of 200 fps. During testing at Nikon, the system achieved a 2-second operating time from the measurement of a piece to be picked up to the movement of the robot arm.

The vision system can accommodate robot arms from numerous manufacturers and is attached to the tip of the arm.

The Nikon Robot Vision Cloud allows such offline operations as changing workpieces and error log management. Cloud software also facilitates centralized management of numerous robot vision systems.
