Matsushita Electric has developed a full-color, reflection liquid-crystal display using low-temperature polysilicon TFT as the LCD driver element. A high-precision image of 75,000 pixels is achieved in a 4-in. model, using a glass substrate that integrates the driver IC with high-density mounting; LSI drivers are not needed. A high-precision display and a high aperture ratio (94%) are simultaneously achieved through an optimal layout design of the TFT array. . . . Claiming a technology breakthrough, Idemitsu Kosan has successfully tested a 10-in. full-color display using organic electroluminescence material. Specifications for the test model are full-color VGA (640 ¥ 480 pixels) with a luminescent panel thickness of 2 mm, simple matrix drive, and the capability to reproduce animation at video rates. . . . Mitsubishi Electric Corp. has developed a 46-in. (116-cm) diagonal plasma display with a luminance of 500 cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 500:1. Thanks to the display`s new discharge-cell-driver method, the high luminescent level is achieved (without filters) at low-power consumption levels. . . . Ulvac Japan Ltd. is marketing its organic electroluminescent-element manufacturing equipment that uses organic electroluminescence. The new equipment includes miniaturized experimental apparatus for material development, miniaturized device research apparatus, production apparatus for large substrates, and material "cloning" apparatus. . . . Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. has developed a front light for reflection-type liquid-crystal use that uses external lighting in bright places and internal light sources in dark places. This unit incorporates a radioscopic prism-forming light-guiding plate that is easily installed. The front light with a built-in front cover achieves a light efficiency of 95%. . . . Hitachi Ltd. has released the SVGA-compatible CP-L850 multimedia liquid-crystal projector. Images are reproduced with high-picture quality by using three high-d
