A new x-ray imaging facility officially opened this month at the University of Southampton (Southampton, UK).

Supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the µ-VIS X-ray Imaging Centre (Southampton, UK) can produce high-resolution 3-D images that enable the internal structures of objects to be studied in incredible detail without needing to break the objects open or damage them.

According to the center's director, professor Ian Sinclair, it is one of the few facilities in the world where objects approaching 2 m in length and 1 m in width can be imaged with an x-ray source.
