MAY 20--Liteye Systems (Littleton, CO; www.liteye.com) has selected the eMagin Corporation (Hopewell Junction, NY; www.emagin.com) high-resolution SVGA+ organic light-emitting-diode (OLED) microdisplays for use in its lightweight display systems. Liteye plans to incorporate the microdisplays in wearable computer applications it will manufacture under a recently announced license agreement with IBM and in thermal-imaging products.

"We have already begun shipping products using eMagin's display technologies to more than 25 of our industrial and military customers and have received excellent feedback," said Kenneth Geyer, vice president of development for Liteye Systems. "eMagin's high-resolution OLED microdisplays will enable us to provide the resolution, performance, operating temperature range, and high power efficiency in our portable head-wearable systems, and they are also ideal for our thermal solutions."

eMagin's displays will be incorporated with Liteye's head-mounted display (HMD) units that will be using IBM's headset technology. The active-matrix color SVGA+ OLED microdisplays will provide 800 x 600-pixel resolution. Because the emissive OLED microdisplay requires no backlight and has system functionality built into the it, the entire system is more compact than previous high-resolution HMD systems. All the imaging data are stored at each pixel between frames, eliminating the flicker and breakup observed on many other HMD systems when the user is actively mobile. The combined technologies will result in a sleeker, smaller, and lightweight headset.

In addition to wearable computers, Liteye head-mounted display units can be attached to flight helmets, combat helmets, and hardhats. They can display everything from a computer screen to infrared video images or standard video images.

Liteye Systems is a designer, manufacturer and marketer of miniature, high-resolution microdisplays, custom projects, and thermal-imaging systems. The Liteye family of products and solutions is distinguished by its unique combination of high resolution, rugged and lightweight construction, low power, and superior optics. Liteye Systems integrates microdisplay and other technologies to provide solutions for military, industrial, security and law enforcement institutions worldwide.

eMagin Corporation designs, develops, and markets virtual imaging system-on-a-chip solutions to enable the visual display of information, data, video, and games through a wide variety of mobile electronic devices and the next-generation of interactive virtual reality systems.
