Planar Systems Inc. (Beaverton, OR; www.planar.com) has signed a $5 million contract with Smiths Industries (Malvern, PA) to supply new, rugged 3ATI color active-matrix, liquid-crystal displays for flight-deck instruments in both military and commercial aircraft. The real-time displays operate from -30°C to +85°C and feature a 240 ¥ 240-pixel matrix in a quad-pixel format.
The United States Display Consortium (San Jose, CA) has awarded a $2 million contract to Welch Allyn Inc. (Skaneateles Falls, NY) to bring a new generation of rear-projection-display lamp systems for flat-panel displays by April 2000. Welch Allyn is contributing a matching $2 million to the project.
Vivid Technologies (Woburn, MA) has received a $3.4 million order for explosives-detection systems to perform luggage screening at the New Athens International Airport in Greece and at the Birmingham Airport in the United Kingdom.

Northrup Grumman Corp. (Los Angeles, CA) has agreed to acquire the Information Systems Division of California Microwave Inc. for $93 million. This division specializes in airborne reconnaissance and surveillance systems, satellite communications systems, and mission planning systems for US government agencies and military services.
