Robots use medical imaging to remove blood clots
Researchers at Vanderbilt University are developing a robotic system which uses steerable needs and medical imaging technology to penetrate the brain with minimal damage and remove deadly blood clots. A CT scan determines the location of a blood clot and thin, nested tubes are operated by the surgeon, who uses CT scan imaging for guidance. The robot rotates, extends, and retracts the tubes to get to the location of the clot, and a suction pump is turned on to remove the blood clot. Vanderbilt’s team reported a 92% success rate when using simulated blood clots in models during feasibility studies.
